About image
"Joel took great care to find out my needs and physical limitations even before we started. He then expertly guided me through an exercise regime that produced positive results across the board. Highly recommended." Dave C, Crouch End, November 2024.

"Joel took the time to create a routine that met my needs and goals. He's been a pleasure to work with and a great trainer who understands how to get the best out of you. I am seeing the desired results from his programme and would definitely recommend him." Ben L, North London, December 2024.

I'm Joel - I'm a personal trainer at the Crouch End Fitness Centre, a brilliant independent gym.

I've been personal training for just over a year and have also in the summer been instructing a fitness class at a community centre. My background is as a runner: I've been fortunate to have run a handful of London Marathons and I'm a big ParkRun fan, when not teaching sessions.

I'm really keen to help two types of people: (1) those who know they need to make a few lifestyle changes but struggle to stay on track- people who want to lose a few pounds / kilograms and tone up, be able to carry the shopping back from Waitrose / M&S a little easier, or have started running and want some good exercises to help with this. People who are juggling long working hours, their kids, and a social life also, and who want targeted, productive, straight to it sessions, and (2) those who are completely new to the gym, a little daunted by all the weights & machines and who want a safe introduction to a fitness centre environment from someone who is completely non-judgemental, and willing to take the time to guide them through exercises step-by-step.

I can also offer a food analysis diary over a week based on NHS healthy eating guidelines - this is about looking at where we could be making incremental changes. It's OK to have a few glasses of wine on Friday & Saturday and cake on Sunday: everything in moderation!

If you think I can help, I offer a free half-hour consultation - this includes a decent chat to establish where you're at, a mini-session of a warm-up, exercises and a cool-down, and a summary plan after.

Personal Training Plans

Fully structured, bespoke supervised programmes: Starting out, all customers are required to undertake a simple health screening to identify any areas of concern. In addition, I ask all customers to complete a fitness assessment induction. This is very important to gain an understanding of your base level of fitness and to set a base of parameters we can use to measure progress. Then we will put together a monthly plan with agreed sessions, goals and review dates.

Nutritional Analysis

With a Level 3 Certificate in Nutrition for Physical Activity, I am able to offer basic food intake analysis, using guidelines published by Public Health England and the NHS. This analysis is included in the bloc session plans of either four or six sessions.

Monthly tip - September 2025

Remember to always warm up before before any strength & endurance session - arm circles, extended arms in front & back, neck side to sides, high knees and heel flicks are all good and simple exercises to get the heart rate a little higher and increase flexibility before your main session.
